Dear all,
Just to clarify and address several, mostly theoretical, questions about spam, as much as I can in my personal capacity…
And sorry for this long mail, you can erase it like spam if you don’t want to see what’s there - your right J
SPAM <http://spam.abuse.net/overview/whatisspam.shtml> is not so firmly defined, and even if the definition was done more precise, the nature of SPAM is unusual> if there is no reaction of the receiver of this kind of mail (opening attachment, clicking on links…), mostly there is no harm – just erase, and you are safe. But, SPAM is not connected only for email, you can have comments on the web site which are full of ads for bizarre products – also SPAM. To solve the problem, people developed SPAM filters which can reduce SPAM, but there is a catch.
Among other usages (viruses, malware, ads…), this kind of spam in comments, is also used for communications (more than 1000 times tried just on our web site) between people – the comment can have some sort of serial number for cracked software, pass for online app or something similar, written there as part of the very ordinary message, like:
“Your site is so good that I intend to come more often here and read your stuff! Guys, great job! Yours, Dusan, ama-456-frd-2020”
This kind of SPAM can easily get through the filters, and it’s obvious that human intervention as a second layer of cleaning is needed, just before erasing all spam messages.
And exactly that is a big problem right now in domain business – users, relying blindly on SPAM filters. People who use spam filters, just erase spam folder without checking what is there, like a trash folder. Then system messages for f.e. domain renewal (with invoices), most often ends in SPAM folder, because they are not configured well. So, user miss renewal and payment, domain is gone, hosting and web site also gone… After panicking on the phone, where usually users blame registrar for not sending notice of expiration, hard time for tech support is still to come – backup needs to be found and install on hosting… A lot of lost time and double work, because of SPAM filters and people not paying attention to them.
So, is it a free speech? People more clever than me can address this issue, but in my opinion - the point is to answer to “unwanted” part of definition. Even if SPAM can be free speech, did you want that SPAM message? Free speech is, in essence, the right to say anything without punishment, but you can’t force me to hear (receive SPAM mail in our case) everything what you want to say – and this is my right – right not to listen J
Regarding the question of anonymous mails automatically marked as spam: my intention wasn’t to address this issue, and most certainly they are not. As I said, people need to check SPAM emails/messages “by hand” and see do they want them or not (the question “do you want this message” is for user, not for SPAM filters to decide on that). My intention was to assure that there is no virus or malware on that link, and to check the source – and as I said, they have anon logo, but authors are signed, it’s not anonymous source. Second layer, methodology – it’s not clear, and something on that you can find here <https://www.vpnmentor.com/blog/censorship-doesnt-just-happen/> . Not personally convinced on that, but – see for yourself.
Cheers,
Dusan

Greetings to all,
Thank you, Dusan, for the infographic and your email, which provoked a question if spam is classified as free speech anywhere in the world and in any of the mentioned countries (are there many precedents?), and subsequently can spam filtering and blocking be considered as censorship, as well?
And the other question, again coming from your email, should all anonymous emails be classified by technical and non-technical filters as spam?
Thank you and best regards,
Narine

Hi Dusan!
I got similar email before. They seem to be reaching the audience by sending standard text email with a bit adjustment as to how they found it to be relevant to the recipient. Useful infographics, but my thought was the same as Michael's - what was the methodology used in order to know how much reliable is the data.
Best wishes,
Olga

Hi Dusan,
Thanks for sharing. I just checked it out, and it seems ok. I'm not sure about the data, though. Would be good to see it fact checked.
Best,
-Michael

Dear all,
After tons of spam during these few years as admin of the web site, I have received one, somehow different email, which I think is not spam and is useful to us.
I have checked the link, it’s ok, and although the logo is “anonymous”, the site is giving personal data of authors.
Of course, the results shown here are under the question, but – check for yourself…
And I apologize in front if this is not relevant to us ;)
Cheers,
Dusan

Hello ,
I saw that you mentioned the Internet Society on your page here: seedig.net/ <http://seedig.net/> so I figured that censorship is a subject you care about.
Internet censorship is growing around the world, but not everyone knows about it. In order to keep everyone aware of this topic, we created a global index ranking each country's online censorship. But we need your help sharing it.
Please spread the message and share this infographic with your users, so everyone can see where their country stands. Our hope is that if everyone sees how many countries are censored, they'll understand the necessity of a free Internet and will be more inclined to support it.
Thank you in advance for sharing this infographic with others: https://www.vpnmentor.com/blog /online-censorship-country- rank/ <https://www.vpnmentor.com/blog/online-censorship-country-rank/>
Best,
Isabella
